Introduction

The Lifelong Learning Master’s Degree in Music and Sound for Entertainment Experiences at ENTI-UB aims to be a benchmark in a changing and demanding world. On the one hand the industry related to the moving image is addressed and on the other it goes deeper into fields such as video games, apps, serious games, news games, gamification, simulators, music in theme parks, the application of music in shows, live performances, stage devices and music and sound in virtual reality.

By going deeper into everything relating to entertainment experiences, several professional profiles and fields of knowledge and expression are included.

Once the Master’s Degree in Music studies is completed you get a Master’s Degree issued by the University of Barcelona, the only one in the field of music production in Catalonia.

The purpose of this master’s degree is to learn to make the most of new opportunities for the use of music whether they be for applications, sound design for Video Games, Serious Games or News Gamesas well as music for the more classical audio-visual experiences (cinema, TV, advertising, etc.) and the most innovative ones (simulation, VR, theme parks, etc.). Knowledge and mastery of the digital tools of music creation and production will be acquired, as well as composition and application of music in shows, live performances and scenic devices.

Abilities acquired

Once the master’s degree is completed, the students will have mastered various digital techniques and tools for music production.

A university master’s degree with these characteristics must be taught in a specific environment, and ENTI-UB is the perfect place. With around 10 years experience training the best developers and with a specific degree for artists, the time came to prepare creators and specialists in everything that has to do with the music and sound of today’s industry and with the entertainment of the future.

At ENTI-UB the student has a personal computer in the classroom and the possibility of using a production box during non-classroom hours. All of the computers contain the different software programs which are used in the different subjects, so the student does not have to buy either a computer or any programs.

One of the attractions at the end of the course will be the premiere of a personal creation with interpreters of an international level at the SGAE Mompou Hall.

For ENTI-UB, it is very important that the students put into practice the knowledge acquired through the study, so “work placements” are included on the subject list which are carried out in collaboration with the most important companies in the field of music production.

The career opportunities are very diverse. In addition, they allow different roles to be combined, to become a multi-disciplinary music professional.

How to access the course

The recommended profiles vary: graduates and students with a knowledge of music, developers, music producers, sound technicians, film students, multimedia artists, composers, music performers and creators of shows linked to music.

Although there are no minimum requirements for previous studies, it is necessary to have an interview with the academic director of the master’s degree in order to access it. To request an interview, please write an e-mail to masters@enti.cat.

Course curriculum

Music Notation

Music notation allows users to create scores as well as MIDIs. Properly edited scores can be used by any performer in recording sessions; they can be used to illustrate academic books and studies; they allow new compositions to be published in the sector’s publishers; and they are necessary to register new musical creations on intellectual property. The MIDIs extracted from an edition can be used for the subsequent music production. A good edition allows users to transfer their own musical ideas in the best possible way. Two fundamental features are worked on in this subject: how music has been edited throughout history and how to properly represent music today.

Interactive and Musical Script

The goal of this subject is to enable students to master the main content of audio-visual language and narrative, as well as the mechanisms of dramaturgy to find the keys to creating a script, and by extension, an interactive script.

Recording techniques

Acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to develop activities at a professional level in recording studios, knowing the principles, languages and specific tools of modern recording techniques. Also the creative possibilities that the use of the same can obtain to record the musical instruments that are part of the current productions attending to timbral, spatial, acoustic and aesthetic needs.

Logic Pro

The purpose of the subject is to enable students to master the DAW Logic Pro tool, standard in the music production industry and a preferred tool among audiovisual composers. Thus, recording techniques, advanced editing, mixing, synthesis and music production will be covered. Virtual orchestration and MIDI concepts will also be studied.

Unity & Unreal

This subject aims to familiarise students with the two most used tools in the video game industry, both in independent as well as in triple A projects. With a practical approach and special emphasis on autonomy and versatility, students will gain exhaustive knowledge will be provided that allows them to incorporate a professional project developed in Unreal Engine or Unity, providing an integral audio solution.

Film Music

The basic techniques of music composition applied to cinema will be seen. Students will learn how to plan a music script appropriate to the narrative/ cinematographic discourse and implement it, as well as make important decisions regarding the imminently narrative element of cinematographic music: how the music discourse will be articulated, what narrative/psychological elements will be explained or hidden, how the music script will be planned and how to work well with the director and the cinematographic producer.

Immersive Audio

Theoretical and practical introduction to audio. The purpose of this subject is to learn about the physical rules of spatial sound and how it is translated into immersive audio production tools. There will also be a creative recording or immersive sound production project in which the concepts learned in coordination with the “sound” subject will be put into practice.

Pro Tools

The purpose of this subject is to provide the student with a deep understanding of the DAW Pro Tools, a standard in the music production industry, and a preferred tool for audio-visual composers. Recording techniques, advanced editing, mixing, synthesis, MIDI orchestration and music production will be studied.

Sound design

Know the basic professional tools needed to develop the audio of a video game in all aspects: dialogues, environments, effects and music. In this way, through the stages of production, recording, editing, mixing, exporting and finally implementing the audio, a real video game will be completed.

Middleware

The purpose of this subject is to familiarise students with FMOD and Wwise, the most widely used Middleware tools in both AAA and independent games. With an eminently practical approach, students will learn the fundamental approach of FMOD and Wwise based on official courses to be able to carry out the role of audio editor in any project that uses these engines.

Digital Luthier

The purpose of this subject is to provide students with the theoretical and practical knowledge which enable them to design, develop and evaluate digital musical instruments which can be integrated in projects within the framework of entertainment.

Mixing & mastering

Mixing and mastering is one of the fundamental phases of music production where creativity and technique combine. Thus, a series of sounds can be put together and given a sound coherence. In this second part of the subject, the skills to find the sound required by each production according to its stylistic characteristics are explored. Broadcast standards will also be understood and the mastering process will be mastered from practice.

History of Interactive Music

An historical journey through the evolution of music and sound in video games and the world of interactive entertainment. Review of the different technological advances that have enabled music for computer, consoles and recreational machine video games. Analysis of the characteristics of each genre (type of video game) and its evolution over time. Learn about the main composers of video game music.

Ableton

Introduction to the physical properties of sound and digital audio, MIDI, music production techniques, synthesis and current tools of music software and hardware. The purpose of this subject is to implement the technical and theoretical knowledge used in the professional field of music production with Ableton.

Project

The purpose of the subjects is to create a musical piece of a work for a string quartet with the option of electronics. From the new string music pieces by composers such as Max Ritchter, Olafur Arnalds, Karl Jenkins and Vladimir Martynov, an original piece will be created that will be released, by professional performers, at one of the best auditoriums in Barcelona.

Intellectual property

Acquire the advanced knowledge that allows you to understand the record industry and facilitate your own artistic and record self-management in the field of music for audiovisuals. At the same time, learn about editorial management and the different options for licenses and content management through practical cases. In this way, these functions can be performed autonomously.

FP

Completion of a master’s degree final project related to the subjects taught. Supporting the objectives, justification and scope of the project, as well as the planning and methodology of development with which it will be carried out.

Work Placements

Carrying out professional work placements in proposed companies during the course.
